What We Do

Siemens Healthineers has been active in Swords supplying medical diagnostic equipment to hospitals and laboratories since 1966.
The site manufactures haematology and immunoassay analysers. These products use advanced technologies including laser optics, mechatronics, robotics and bio-chemistry processes to diagnose multiple health conditions from a single blood sample.
In addition to manufacturing, Swords employees support the continuous innovation of current and new products and the development of laboratory automation software, exported to more than 50 countries.
Our culture of high performance blends seamlessly with a care for those we work with, the customers that rely on us and the community and environment that we share.

The role of Engineering is to manage all technical aspects of our products and processes within the manufacturing facility while working within regulatory and cost boundaries. In addition to work on the manufacturing floor, Engineering also work with our key supplier partners in Europe, USA and Asia.
Engineering activities can require significant technical depth ranging from transactional tasks such as preparation of budget and bills of material, update of process instructions and test procedures and co-ordination of engineering change implementation to the management of complex projects.
The Engineering function in Swords is divided into seven main areas:
- Engineering Services Team which includes Document Control and process validations.
- Manufacturing Engineering Team provides technical support to on-site manufacturing lines and to our supplier partners to minimise technical disruptions and prevent outage while advancing cost reduction and process improvement projects.
- ADVIA Centaur Product Lifecycle Engineering Team reports functionally to Global Engineering Organisation at Tarrytown and is responsible for lifecycle support to Centaur product lines including management of obsolescence.
- ADVIA Haematology Product Lifecycle Engineering Team including software development reports functionally to Global Engineering Organisation at Tarrytown and is responsible for lifecycle support to Haematology product lines.
- Atellica Immunoassay Product Lifecycle Engineering Team reports functionally to Global Engineering Organisation at Tarrytown and is responsible for lifecycle support to Atellica I/A product lines including management of obsolescence.
- Informatics – Centralink Software R&D Team reports to Informatics R&D headquartered in Flanders and works closely with OEM designer MIPS in Belgium and Informatics R&D groups in Glasgow and Flanders.
- Informatics CentraLink Product Lifecycle Engineering Hardware Team reports to Informatics CPE headquartered in Glasgow and works closely with Informatics R&D group in Glasgow and Flanders.
The main function of production is to transform raw materials into finished goods. This is achieved by assembling component parts into sub-assemblies, and then building these sub-assemblies into instruments. The instruments are then tested in accordance with the test procedure and only released for shipment to our customers once they have met strict release criteria. Production must ensure quality and regulatory compliance is achieved at each step in the process.
Process improvement is vital to achieving operation excellence. This is accomplished by using lean manufacturing principles to identify and eliminate waste in the production process and to digitise and automate where possible.
There are a significant level of R&D activity in Swords – R&D software design engineers and Product Lifecycle Engineering located at Swords, who report functionally to R&D organisations in Glasgow (Delaware), Tarrytown (New York) and Flanders (New Jersey). Our New Product Design engineers liaise with USA and Germany based R&D centres for technology transfer. Several Swords engineers are on long-term delegation assignments at R&D sites in the USA.
