MR Research Collaboration Program Advancing MR Innovation Through Scientific Collaboration
The MR Research Collaboration Program is a competitive research collaboration initiative from Siemens Healthineers Magnetic Resonance (MR).
The program supports investigator-driven scientific research within strategically defined research themes that align with future MR innovation priorities. Siemens Healthineers periodically publishes Strategic Research Collaboration Calls addressing high-priority scientific and clinical challenges.
Each call defines an umbrella research topic while allowing researchers the scientific freedom to propose their own innovative research questions, methodology and study design within such pre-defined field.
Our objective is to accelerate scientific innovation through transparent, competitive, and roadmap-aligned collaborations with the global MR research community.
Current Research Call

One-Click Microstructure MRI
Translating advanced diffusion microstructure MRI into robust, scalable research workflows
Application period:
October 15 - November 15, 2026
Advanced diffusion microstructure MRI methods such as NODDI, SANDI, IMPULSED, and other emerging diffusion modelling approaches have demonstrated significant scientific potential for improved tissue characterization beyond conventional diffusion imaging.
Despite these advances, broader adoption remains challenged by acquisition harmonization, computational complexity, reproducible processing and scalable deployment across research sites.
This Strategic Research Collaboration Call invites research proposals from the scientific community contributing to the umbrella topic “One-Click Microstructure MRI.”
Researchers are encouraged to develop innovative scientific approaches that help make advanced microstructure MRI more accessible, reproducible, and scalable for research applications.
Advanced diffusion modelling (e.g., NODDI, SANDI, IMPULSED, …)
Harmonized acquisition protocols and multi-centre reproducibility
Enablement via Siemens Healthineers’ Open Recon interface
Containerized processing workflows
Automated reconstruction and processing pipelines that do not require user interaction
AI-supported image processing
Quantitative imaging biomarkers
Workflow optimisation
Clinical and translational research applications
These examples are intended to illustrate the scope of the call and are not intended to limit scientific creativity and, therefore, the list is not exhaustive.

Submit Proposal

Applicants submit their proposal using the MR Research Collaboration Program Application Template. Only complete applications are eligible for review.

Multi-step blinded review of project proposals taking into account the content and economic boundary conditions, including the proportionality of the requested funding relative to the proposed scope, expected impact and deliverables.

Selection of highest-ranking/best-fitting project proposals within the available program budget and overall collaboration portfolio.

Collaboration Agreement
Prior to the start of any project activities, Siemens Healthineers will provide the participating institution with a draft of a Siemens Healthineers Research Collaboration Agreement that details the contractual terms of the award, including the management of intellectual property, responsibility on clinical matters, confidentiality, project budget, payment schedule, requirements for progress reports, etc.
Project activities may only commence after all applicable agreements have been fully negotiated and executed.
Regulatory & Compliance Information
- The MR Research Collaboration Program supports scientific research.
- The published research topics are intended to encourage scientific investigation and collaboration. They are not intended to solicit product validation, performance evaluation, or regulatory studies.
- Each participating institution is responsible for obtaining all applicable ethics approvals, institutional approvals and any approvals required under applicable national laws and regulations before commencing project activities.
- Where the proposed research involves the use or investigation of a medical device, including investigational or research software or sequences, the applicable regulatory pathway must be assessed and described in the application (e.g., MDR, IRB study).
- Selection of a project for the MR Research Collaboration Program does not constitute confirmation of the applicable regulatory classification or pathway, nor does it constitute regulatory or ethics approval.
- Participation in this program and selection of a project does not replace or waive any applicable regulatory, ethical or institutional requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Academic hospitals, universities, and research institutions, or clinicians and scientists (after internal alignment with their employer, i.e. the institution) with relevant expertise in Magnetic Resonance research.
No. Applicants are encouraged to propose their own innovative scientific approach within the announced umbrella topic.
No. Applications are subject to a competitive review process taking scientific and economic factors into account. Only the highest-ranked proposals will be selected.
The submission of an application does not give rise to any legal or contractual right to receive funding, enter into a collaboration agreement, or obtain reimbursement of any costs associated with the application process. Siemens Healthineers reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to select, reject, or not consider any application. Satisfaction of the eligibility or evaluation criteria does not guarantee the award of a funding.
The requested budget is considered in the review process. Applicants are therefore encouraged to request a proportionate and well-justified budget that reflects the resources required to achieve the proposed objectives.
Funding efficiency and the relationship between requested funding, expected scientific impact and proposed deliverables may be considered as part of the overall evaluation.
If the requested budget exceeds the internal budget scope, Siemens Healthineers may either reject the application or provide a final and binding counteroffer. The submission of an application does not give rise to any legal or contractual right to receive funding.
The requested in-kind contribution is considered in the review process. Any in-kind contribution follows an internal approval process, taking into account regulatory, IP and confidentiality considerations.
The submission of an application does not give rise to any legal or contractual right to receive in-kind contribution.
No. Successful applicants will need to conclude a dedicated Research Collaboration Agreement with Siemens Healthineers before project initiation.
