BNP and NT-proBNP

Powerful tools in the diagnosis of heart failure

BNP is derived from a precursor molecule known as proBNP. In patients with heart failure, ventricular stress and volume overload causes the release of proBNP into circulation where it is immediately cleaved into BNP and NT-proBNP.

BNP

A hormone released by the heart in response to increased pressure and stretching of the heart muscle.

Clinical conditions, such as acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, valvular heart disease, myocarditis, pulmonary hypertension, renal deficiency, stroke, and sepsis, can elevate NT-proBNP levels in the absence of heart failure.
