Expanding access to care through mobile breast screening programs

Hospitals and health systems nationwide continue to recognize health disparities across their patient populations, often exacerbated by location or socioeconomic status. At Siemens Healthineers, we aspire to create better outcomes and experiences for patients, no matter where they live. Many families, especially in remote areas, have limited access to healthcare, which can delay potentially life-saving cancer diagnoses and treatments. Barriers to cancer screening often include the lack of insurance or ability to pay for out-of-pocket expenses, lack of transportation to a healthcare provider, or inability to take time off during work hours.

In an effort to bridge this gap, we partner with health systems and local community organizations to provide uninsured women free mammograms in underserved urban and rural regions around the country. To date, Siemens Healthineers has provided over 2,300 uninsured women with free mammograms—with many receiving their first-ever exam and some scheduling necessary follow-ups.

As part of its Value Partnership with Siemens Healthineers, WakeMed Health & Hospitals, for example, has co-hosted community screening events with us, bringing 3D mammography screenings to the greater Triangle area in North Carolina. For WakeMed, the mobile mammography project is part of an ongoing commitment to provide the community with greater access to critical breast cancer screenings and diagnostic tools to support early detection and intervention.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), another Value Partnership customer, also aims to increase community access and reduce health disparities among its patient population. Its mobile screening events have helped serve under- and uninsured women in South Carolina.

While mobile mammography programs are not exclusive to Value Partnership customers, expanding equitable access to care is often a top priority for healthcare leadership as we help envision and execute their long-term strategies to improve the overall health and well-being of the patients they serve.
