Adopted from the successful Latin American series, Hemostasis Learning Essentials is an educational program comprising clinical and scientific content dedicated to hemostasis.
Taught by renowned experts in hemostasis, the sessions will increase your understanding of hemostasis principles by broadening and strengthening your knowledge of basic coagulation, bleeding disorders, thrombophilia, anticoagulant therapy, lupus anticoagulant, and other acquired coagulopathies.

The program consists of five series of on-demand sessions that provide insights into diagnostic possibilities and interpretation of laboratory results in hemostasis and thrombosis.

Series 1: Basic Coagulation
This series is recommended for specialists in clinical laboratory, hematology, intensive care, and emergency. By completing this basic coagulation module, you will learn:
- The importance of pre-analytical aspects on coagulation testing
- How basic coagulation and tests such as PT, aPTT, and fibrinogen can contribute to the diagnosis and related methodologies for optical and mechanical colorimetric/chromogenic assays
- Application and interpretation of tests in basic coagulation
Series 2: Bleeding Disorders
This series is recommended for specialists in cardiology, clinical laboratory, emergency, gynecology, hematology, and intensive care. Join us to learn the following:
- The diagnosis of bleeding disorders, severity, and whether they are hereditary or acquired based on laboratory tests
- Important pre-analytical impact related to platelet function, factors, and VWD
- Which assays are indicated, their applicability and methodologies, interpretation and comorbidities, and drug interactions that can affect assays for this type of pathology
Series 3: Thrombophilia
This series is recommended for specialists in cardiology, clinical laboratory, emergency, hematology, intensive care, neurology, and gynecology. Complete this thrombophilia unit to learn about:
- The various general diseases caused by thrombophilia, as well as their origin and how they occur (if they are acquired or hereditary)
- When and how to look for the presence of thrombophilia, and the role of clinical laboratory tests for diagnostic and prognosis follow-up
- The most harmful diseases caused by thrombophilia and forms of treatment/follow-up, indicated tests, applicability and methodologies, comorbidities, risk factors, drug interactions, and general interpretation
Series 4: Anticoagulant Therapy
Series 4 is recommended for specialists in cardiology, clinical laboratory, emergency, hematology, intensive care, pediatrics, and gynecology. Learning objectives for this series include:
- The history of anticoagulation, the most common anticoagulant therapy substances, their mechanisms, and related laboratory diagnosis
- The adverse effects of heparin and heparin resistance
- How heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is managed
Series 5: Lupus Anticoagulant and Other Acquired Coagulopathies
The final series in Hemostasis Learning Essentials is recommended for specialists in cardiology, clinical laboratory, emergency, gynecology, hematology, rheumatology, and intensive care. By completing series 5, you will gain knowledge in:
- Lupus Anticoagulant: the laboratory criteria for the diagnosis of antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APLS), including some pitfalls and how to distinguish between Lupus and factor inhibitor
- DIC: the pathophysiology of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), how this can cause bleeding, thrombosis, or both simultaneously in the patient and how DIC is diagnosed
- COVID related Coagulopathy, including VITT: the pathophysiology of COVID-19 in relation to thrombosis and how COVID-19–related thrombosis is diagnosed and treated

Meet our renowned speakers
Jecko Thachil, MD
Jecko Thachil, MD, is an honorary consultant in haemostasis and thrombosis at Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital and clinical academic professor of infection and global health at the University of Manchester, UK. He is a member of the Subcommittee on Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation of the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis and the editor of the journal Physicians' Information and Education Resource for the American College of Physicians. He is the author of more than 70 publications in specialized journals and co-author of the guideline on DIC of the British Committee for Standards in Hematology.
John Mitsios, Ph.D.
John Mitsios holds a PhD degree in chemistry from the University of Ioannina, Greece, and is a postdoctoral fellow at the San Diego-California School of Medicine. His main research interest is in coagulation, with an emphasis on the laboratory diagnosis of bleeding disorders. He was an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and an assistant clinical chemist at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Most recently, he was deputy director of the Specialty Coagulation Laboratory at BioReference Laboratories and co-author of 20 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters. Currently, he is a senior clinical hemostasis consultant at Siemens Healthineers.
