Contrast-enhanced mammography is a promising new technique that is already commercially available. By utilizing an iodinated contrast agent, cancers are enhanced that sometimes do not show up on digital mammography. Therefore, it can offer a much higher sensitivity than digital mammography alone.
Paul Fisher in Stony Brook, New York (USA) and his team are conducting research on contrast-enhanced breast tomosynthesis. So far they’ve compared contrast-enhanced breast tomosynthesis with contrast-enhanced mammography for lesion assessment, contrast enhancement, and margin identification with respect to dose. They’ve also evaluated synthetic contrast-enhanced mammography images.
