In coagulation, Protein S is a natural anticoagulant that helps keep the body’s hemostatic balance between bleeding and clotting. When Protein S is missing, that balance is upset and the patient’s risk of venous thromboembolism is increased. Utilizing the right assay at the right time to determine the type of Protein S deficiency to guide treatment can be difficult and lead to diagnostic dilemmas, with sometimes tragic results.

The International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) issued new recommendations and an algorithm for clinical laboratory testing of Protein S deficiency to help clinicians navigate this difficult subject. Our speaker will present her research around using this algorithm to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, as well as cost effectiveness of testing.

Presenting on this topic, Dr. Marian Rollins-Raval will help you:

  • Describe the primary mechanism by which Protein S functions as a natural anticoagulant and the disorder that results from its deficiency
  • Delineate the current plasma-based Protein S assays and their limitations
  • Apply the new ISTH guideline for Protein S evaluation for clinical accuracy/efficiency and cost effectiveness
