Summary:

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Because of diabetic patients’ inability to metabolize and process glucose, there is enhancement of morbidity and mortality realized through other complications, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, neuropathies and renal failure. More than 30.3 million American’s have diabetes but 1 in 4 don’t know it. By 2030 it is projected that 54.9 million Americans will have diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association has advised on the use of Hemoglobin A1c as a clinical tool for monitoring progression and treatment of diabetes, and more recently as a diagnostic tool, using standard cutoff values for normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes and full-blown diabetes. With many hemoglobin A1c methods available in today’s market, laboratorians must be confident in providing healthcare givers the accurate information they need to effectively identify and treat patients with diabetes.

Speaking on these findings, Dr. Steven A. Noel, Ph.D. senior clinical consultant at Siemens Healthineers, will help you:

  • Understand the epidemiological characteristics and impact of diabetes
  • Learn about the biochemistry and pathophysiological aspects of the disease.
  • Discover the clinical utility of hemoglobin A1c.
  • Gain insight into analytical and quality parameters that assure appropriate clinical decisions for identifying, classifying, monitoring patients with type I or II diabetes, gestational diabetes and prediabetes.
