Summary:

Infection from SARS-CoV-2 can lead to severe pulmonary complications in many patients. Although the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are dominated by respiratory symptoms, some patients have severe cardiovascular damage. Various cardiac complications like cardiovascular disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, heart failure, myocarditis, cardiac injury, and even myocardial infarction have been found to influence the mortality of patients with COVID-19. In addition, some patients with underlying cardiovascular diseases might have an increased risk of death. Therefore, understanding the damage caused by SARS-CoV-2 to the cardiovascular system and the underlying mechanisms is of the greatest importance, so that treatment of these patients can be timely and effective in order to reduce mortality. It is imperative to effectively risk stratify these patients to determine those at highest risk who may require more intensive surveillance and support. Cardiac troponin and more specifically high sensitivity troponin may play an important role in the identification the patients a greatest risk of severe complications.

Speaking on these findings, Dr. Jim Aguanno, Ph.D. senior clinical consultant at Siemens Healthineers, will help you:

  • Discuss some of the cardiac complications seen in COVID-19 patients
  • Discuss some of the mechanisms causing myocardial injury in COVID-19 patients
  • Discuss the potential clinical utility of cardiac troponin as a prognostic marker in COVID-19 patients
