Opioids

Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic, 25–40 times more potent than morphine. It is also used as a replacement for methadone in the treatment of heroin addiction. Buprenorphine overdose symptoms can be very serious, even leading to coma and death. It may be abused and is subject to criminal diversion.

 

Oxycodone

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opiate narcotic analgesic with very high abuse and addiction potential. There are numerous reports of diversion, pharmacy thefts, and illegal prescriptions. Oxycodone is one of the most frequently abused prescription pain medications globally, often by healthcare professionals.

 

Tramadol

Tramadol is a synthetic opioid narcotic analgesic with abuse potential. It is among the 50 most prescribed drugs in many countries and is one of the most diverted drugs.

 

Meperidine

Meperidine is a synthetic opioid narcotic analgesic. Similar to morphine and other opioids, it has high abuse potential and is subject to criminal diversion. It is less abused than other opioids, possibly due to its low bioavailability when taken orally. It is most effective when injected.

 

Methadone/EDDP

Methadone/EDDP is a synthetic opioid used for analgesia, sedation, and maintenance in heroin addiction. It has the potential for abuse and is subject to criminal diversion.

Alcohol

Ethyl glucuronide (EtG)

Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is a metabolite of ethyl alcohol that is formed in the body following exposure to ethanol, such as by drinking alcoholic beverages. An EtG biomarker detects alcohol ingestion longer than standard alcohol tests, as the EtG metabolite can be detected in the urine for a longer period than the alcohol parent.
