Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I had experience having done one before in a different career path. I love the fact you can learn on the job and get paid for it. It’s a great way to get qualifications and create your own career doing what you like.

What attracted you to work for Siemens Healthineers?

The fact that Siemens Healthineers is such a big company with lots of opportunities to progress further in so many ways. It’s also really cool to work on such specialist equipment that help save people’s lives.

What does your typical working day look like?

Firstly, I would travel to site where I would meet my mentor, we’d then meet the customer and understand the reason why we are there. We’d then carry out work, depending on what type of call it is, it could range from an install, maintenance or troubleshooting work. Once this is complete, we’d then either continue to another site for an additional call or make our way home.

What are the best parts of your role and your apprenticeship?

The things I love the most about my role is that every day is different, the fact I travel to different sites around the country and also travel abroad for training makes it exciting. Seeing new places and meeting new people helps keep everyday fresh and this keeps me on my toes.

What advice would you give someone who is currently considering an apprenticeship with Siemens Healthineers?

I would 100% recommend them to take the same leap I did as it’s the best decision I’ve made. I’ve learned so much along the way and I’ll continue to learn everyday with this job. It’s given me a great base so that I can hopefully progress within the company in the future.

Why did you decide to do an Apprenticeship?

After school, I went straight into full-time employment and worked at my local hospital.  At the time, I didn’t get a chance to continue my education and develop my own skills and knowledge.  After working for six years, I decided it was time to learn new skills and develop my career. I thought an Apprenticeship would be the best way to do this as it gives the ability to gain work experience while completing qualifications.

What attracted you to work for Siemens Healthineers?

While working at Northampton General Hospital, I had a job as an administrator for EBME (Electro-biomedical Engineering) for two years. I was fascinated by the application of medical equipment and how it works. This equipment is used to diagnose and treat people every day on their care pathways. Upon searching for an apprenticeship, I found one for Siemens Healthineers and started to research the Siemens Healthineers systems and the medical fields that they make equipment for. This was an impressive and extensive amount of medical equipment and I noted that some of this is used within EBME. Having completed my research and Siemens Healthineers also being a well-known and reputable company, I decided to apply for the apprenticeship.

What does your typical working day look like?

A working day in the first year of my apprenticeship, was going to college every day to gain a qualification in engineering. This started with engineering units such as Electrical wiring and installations, turning, milling, fitting, welding, and metal fabrication. This was a great year to set my foundations and develop my skills and knowledge in basic engineering.

Throughout my second year I have spent days shadowing Imaging Customer Service Engineers for various modalities. I have seen MR, MI, CT, AX, XP and Mammography equipment. This includes learning and assisting with maintenance, repair, fault diagnostics and investigations on medical equipment. I have recently started my third year and will be training on my first system the Mira/Elara Mobilett x-ray system. I plan to pass this training and to be mentored on the system.

What are the best parts of your role and your apprenticeship?

The best part about my role is working on medical equipment and learning how it operates. I enjoy understanding how our customers use our equipment and why they choose Siemens Healthineers. The satisfaction from repairing vital medical equipment and returning it to customers such as the NHS is unrivalled. This equipment can be used to diagnose critically ill patients and help medical professionals save lives.

What advice would you give someone who is currently considering an apprenticeship with Siemens Healthineers?

My advice would be to apply, as the Apprenticeship with Siemens Healthineers is a great way to develop your career and have a future in engineering. Note that they are a leading company in medical technology and provide one of the best training services you will find. If you are motivated and keen to learn about Siemens Healthineers, then this apprenticeship will be well suited for you.
