Efficient organization of stroke treatment at the Emergency Department (ED) relies on several factors: the ED staff's awareness of possible stroke patients, high-priority care, fast clinical symptom assessment, concurrent emergency neuro-imaging and blood tests, and immediate initiation of therapy. Early differentiation of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke is crucial for treatment decisions.
Siemens precision diagnostic tools, streamlined data management, and high-efficiency workflows support you in meeting this organizational challenge and thus providing optimal emergency care for your stroke patients. To save time. To save brain.

Lab Diagnostics

Immediate basic blood testing is mandatory for every patient suspected of stroke directly after arriving in the ED. International guidelines require complete blood count, coagulation, metabolic and inflammatory parameters to be determined.
Siemens' broad spectrum of laboratory diagnostic assays and instruments, can help provide risk stratification and assessment of patients suspected of stroke.

CT

Widespread availability and lack of contraindication (e.g., mechanical ventilation or cardiac pacemakers) makes CT the most frequently used diagnostic procedure to differentiate ischemic from hemorrhagic stroke. The initial differential diagnosis is facilitated by CT, as this technique allows for the detection of bleeding with high sensitivity in short time frames. In accordance with stroke management guidelines, modern ED should have access to at least basic CT imaging for a fast and reliable differential diagnosis of stroke-mimicking diseases, ischemic, and hemorrhagic stroke. Non-contrast CT usually suffices for evidence-based decisions as to initial stroke therapy, but availability of perfusion CT and CT angiography enables localization of early demarcation of tissue at risk and blood vessel occlusions.
Siemens CT scanners provide you with the latest imaging technology, outstanding image analysis applications, and smooth integration into your health data network.

MR

MR imaging in the ED allows for reliable early differentiation of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke as well as detection and localization of small ischemic areas and edema. For the detection of ischemic stroke within the first hours after symptom onset and best available discrimination of infarcted brain areas and tissue at risk, dedicated MR sequences like diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and MR perfusion (PWI) evaluation, offer superior sensitivity. In addition, MR angiography allows for radiation-free vessel imaging, enabling comprehensive evaluation and treatment decision within minutes. This makes MR imaging the diagnostic modality of choice - particularly for young patients suspected of stroke.
In the case of hemorrhagic stroke, dedicated MR sequences such as susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) enable visualizing the bleeding. Siemens supports stroke management in your ED with high-performance MR imaging technology, targeted imaging sequences, and streamlined diagnostic workflows thanks to smooth integration in your IT environment.

Ultrasound

A cerebral vascular ultrasound provides information on the carotid arteries and the intracranial vessels. This test is commonly used to evaluate patients with ischemic strokes, TIA’s and for the assessment of carotid artery disease. Transcranial Doppler/ Duplex ultrasound allows for a quick evaluation of the blood flow in the major cerebral arteries of the brain. In the case of a subarachnoidal hemorrhage, ultrasound can be a useful tool to diagnose and monitor vasospasm. In the ED, ultrasound combines fast and reliable diagnosis with the benefit of radiation free-scanning. Siemens ultrasound scanners and the combination of syngo® Arterial Health Package (AHP) help you provide vascular diagnostic and cardiovascular risk analysis for your stroke patient’s right at the point of care.

syngo.share

Getting and sharing patient information is key for the Emergency Department. syngo.share1 is the smart VNA (vendor-neutral archives) for unified, patient-centric clinical image management and sharing. It provides a comprehensive picture of all available images, reports, multi-media, and non-DICOM data of a patient (like blood results), structured according to the clinicians’ needs.

Soarian ED

Soarian® Emergency Department (Soarian ED) is a web-based emergency department solution that fits seamlessly into Soarian Clinicals and closes the gaps between outpatient and inpatient care. As the first port of call for a sick person, through to delivering post-inpatient care, the emergency department performs numerous tasks that must interact quickly and reliably. The clinicians conduct the necessary examinations directly in the department or can make use of all the hospital’s facilities for the diagnosis. For example, radiological examinations can be ordered with Soarian ED, reported on using the connected picture archiving and communications system syngo.plaza and then viewed immediately in the emergency department or on the care unit. Once the physician has completed the treatment and documentation, all procedures are available for transmission to the health insurer and the practitioner involved in the patient’s further care.
