Diagnostics for seasonal respiratory viruses: What to expect for the next season.

Originally recorded at ESCV 2022, Manchester, UK, September 8, 2022

This one hour symposium will focus on testing for respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2 and other seasonal respiratory viruses using molecular methods. The challenging and dynamic nature of this field will be highlighted along with a discussion as to how labs are addressing the evolution of testing needs.

During the flu season, several life-threatening seasonal viruses are co-circulating, such as IAV, IBV, HRSV, and SARS-CoV-2. Fast, simultaneous detection of these viruses is important for the management of certain population groups, such as hospitalized patients with symptoms of respiratory infection, children <2 years, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. The WHO now recommends integrating SARS-CoV-2 into the influenza surveillance program. The FTD SARS-CoV-2/FluA/FluB/HRSV Assay* shows excellent clinical performance and is a new diagnostic tool suitable for the management of patients with symptoms of respiratory infection.
