    The current PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) world was a significant evolutionary leap from the days of plain film reading in the 1990s. The DICOM imaging system was primarily designed for radiology, but soon other imaging departments like cardiology were swept up in this first wave of digitalization. They acquired their own out-of-the-box “departmental” PACS systems.

    The results were outstanding. The new digital functions enabled diagnoses and knowledge that previously seemed impossible. But over the years, IT systems have become scattered, and silos of data and expertise have emerged that are difficult and expensive to connect and secure.
