A passion for the business of healthcare
Tobias Lutz has always focused on the business of healthcare. His education focused on hospital administration. Since those early days, he has worked as a financial controller for a hospital group, a manager, and now, as a consultant with Siemens Healthineers.
He works with clients to plan new hospitals, from the earliest market assessments and feasibility studies to workflow process optimization and business modelling, all the way to opening day and the first patient admissions.
Healthcare is complex and, according to Tobias, when you begin a new project, the way forward – the solution – is rarely immediately apparent. It emerges through teamwork and learning everything possible about the market and the client.
“We are purely focused on healthcare – all my colleagues – we are all very passionate about the healthcare market.”
Setting a course for hospital development
Tobias earned a degree in hospital administration and management and went on to roles in hospital management. Tobias entered the consulting world with one of the “big four” in 2011 and worked exclusively on hospital related projects initially. However, his project mix came to include other sectors, like insurance. With Siemens Healthineers Value Partners, Tobias saw the opportunity to again focus exclusively on his passion for hospital and healthcare facilities projects. “With Siemens Healthineers Value Partners, I was able to regain this pure focus within the hospital and provider market, which is where my heart and my core expertise is,” he explains.
Bridging medical need and financial reality
Tobias works closely with Siemens Financial Services (SFS), a subsidiary of Siemens AG “We built this bridge from medical needs to the financials, which is more my part in these projects,” he explains.
Bringing a new health center to life
Tobias and his colleagues from Siemens Healthineers Value Partners started laying the groundwork for the new facility. They helped determine the best location, they analyzed the local market, and made forecasts on the anticipated case mix the new hospital would see.
As projects mature, Siemens Healthineers Value Partners take on additional roles, working with architects and clinical teams to help ensure the physical structure would enable optimized workflows and deliver a superior patient experience.
“You have to face situations when you start a new project or a new task, where you don't know the way forward immediately. We work together as a team to develop and refine ideas, then bring them to life.”
Unwinding and recharging with music and exercise
Since he was a child, Tobias has loved playing the piano. “It’s a great way to take my mind away from work,” he says. He grew up in the countryside, and still enjoys the tranquility of wild spaces. “I like to escape the big city and head to the countryside, to the little village where I grew up, and go mountain biking in the forest.” Keeping a healthy balance between work and personal interests is a cornerstone of the culture of Siemens Healthineers Value Partners.
Consulting expertise in times of crisis and beyond
In the near future, Tobias anticipates that digitalization will continue to be both a primary challenge and a huge opportunity for healthcare. Where today, hospitals and health systems are decentralized and care is fragmented, tomorrow he anticipates integrated, patient-centric, continuously improving systems. He expects Siemens Healthineers Value Partners to play an important role in the maturation of healthcare. “To actually bring this together, orchestrate this, in the end, it’s really beneficial for the patients,” he concludes.
