Insights Series – Issue 5: Reducing the fear and anxiety associated with breast cancer screening
Jul 31, 2019
Faster results. Quicker care for those who need it. Less anxiety for all patients. A team at Baylor Clinic, led by Emily Sedgwick, MD, set out to accomplish this and more by designing a more efficient patient experience.
This paper examines how the team is delivering outcomes that matter to patients through a better diagnostic experience in breast care.
- Breast cancer remains the world’s leading cause of cancer deaths among women.
- Due to the associated stress and anxiety, many women choose not to participate in a timely screening, either through ultrasound imaging, mammography, or MRI scans.
- At Baylor Clinic, a 5-step process was established to detect breast cancer earlier and start treatment faster to ultimately achieve better results.3
- The time to treatment was reduced from 14 days (national average) to 1 day, which can lead to an improved quality of life. Delaying in treatment can lower the five-year mortality rate by as much as 10 %.2
