The role of Siemens Healthineers in the COVID-19 pandemic
Developing solutions and supporting clinical settings

Jul 01, 2020

A message from Peter Harrison, Managing Director GB&I

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to provide a challenge for many of us, having caused significant disruption to both our personal and professional lives. The progress made in tackling the disease, however, is testament to how well we have adapted to this challenging situation. Of course, we must continue to remain vigilant, and we work closely with our customers in Great Britain and Ireland as the challenges we all face continue to evolve.

Yet positives also emerge during times of crisis. The importance of digitalisation in healthcare has never been clearer to see, with adoption of remote and smart technologies on the rise. A partnership approach to working with healthcare providers has also been present throughout – from our customer service and enterprise service teams working hand in hand with customers, to our voluntary participation in the Ventilator Challenge UK, supporting ventilator manufacturers to scale up production in a time of great need*.

At Siemens Healthineers, we are proud to be an integral part of the solution. The resilience of our people, combined with the innovation of our technology, and flexibility of our service offering has placed us in good stead in the battle against COVID-19. Rest assured that our commitment to supporting this battle is steadfast; we continue to work diligently to meet our customers’ evolving needs.

*Siemens Healthineers does not manufacture ventilators nor do ventilators feature within our product portfolio

Diagnosis of COVID-19 and the role of Computed Tomography

CT scanners have been employed in the response to COVID-19 since the initial build of the Red Cross Hospital in Wuhan, with high resolution imaging, such as that enabled by the SOMATOM go.Top, SOMATOM go.All and SOMATOM X.cite – facilitating both diagnosis and evaluation of disease.

We have delivered the first CT container solution to North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, offering a separate environment for the scanning of non-COVID related examinations. Read the press release.

Ultrasound

Bedside ultrasound to diagnose lung pathology and for vascular access in COVID-19 patients

Siemens Healthineers ultrasound machines and sonography equipment address the complex clinical requirements of COVID-19 – enabling cost-effective, early diagnosis of pneumonia without radiation exposure.

Portable systems such as the ACUSON Juniper, ACUSON P500 and ACUSON Freestyle (cable-free ultrasound) are helpful in evaluating pleural abnormalities, detecting catheter malposition and treating pleural effusion1,2,3.

Laboratory Diagnostics: answering the call on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19

Fast, accurate screening and monitoring are essential for the disease management of COVID-19 and our diagnostics solutions in infectious disease, haematology, blood gas and other laboratory tests are at the disposal of our customers and partners.

We have expanded infectious-disease testing capabilities by developing a SARS-CoV-2 laboratory serology assay4 to detect presence of IgM and IgG antibodies in blood. This reveals if a person had COVID-19 even if they were asymptomatic or undiagnosed.

Point-of-Care Testing

Blood gas testing at the point-of-care

Blood gas analysis provides rapid information on a patient’s oxygenation, pulmonary function, acid-base balance and metabolic status. Critically ill patients requiring ventilation should be monitored with blood gas analysis in order to personalise ventilator settings.

We have two key blood gas analysis solutions:
