Head of point-of-care facility named as top 100 UK manufacturing professional

Top 100

Ali Burns, Managing Director of the Siemens Healthineers GB&I Sudbury Manufacturing facility, has been recognised as one of The Manufacturer’s Top 100 UK Manufacturing Professionals for this year. Nominated in the categories of inspiring leader, innovator and unsung hero, the healthcare industrialist was listed alongside other exceptional leaders and innovators.

Judged by a panel including Chief Executive of IMechE – Colin Brown, Chief Executive of the Institution for Engineering and Technology – Nigel Fine, and Chief Executive of CEME – Bill Williams, The Manufacturer’s Top 100 were commended for their achievements during a national emergency.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed high demands on the manufacturing industry. Ali, the team at Sudbury, and their global colleagues in point-of-care (POC), worked tirelessly to support the national response. To ensure the supply of vital POC instruments to hospitals throughout the pandemic, the Sudbury manufacturing facility scaled up production, with all team members working shifts to build what would normally be produced in a year in just two months.

In addition to the efforts made to maintain supply to customers as the UK went into lockdown, Ali and nearly 100 other colleagues from Siemens Healthineers and Siemens joined the VentilatorChallengeUK Consortium, providing support across a number of areas including the assembly operation. This enabled 20 years of worth of ventilators to be built in 12 weeks.

“If you’d told me in late 2019, that we’d move from planning how we were going to increase awareness of our business in the local community to working with F1 teams, aeroplane wing operatives and car manufacturers I don’t think I would have believed you. I’m grateful for the nomination – thank you and well done to everyone who was recognised. This award wouldn’t be possible without the fantastic team within POC and colleagues I had the pleasure of working alongside as part of the VentilatorChallengeUK. I feel very humbled to be recognised in such a manner.”
