Shaping the future generation of biomedical engineers

A collaboration between Universiti Malaya and Siemens Healthineers Malaysia

2022-02-14
The global COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating impact on lives and livelihoods across the world has again reminded us of investing in adequate healthcare technology and solutions, be it public or private. However, as we continue to invest in new hospitals, medical equipment, and technology, to whom do we entrust the enormous responsibility of sustaining the growth of this area?

In 2019, Universiti Malaya’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Siemens Healthineers Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate a collaborative educational program designed to provide up-to-date information and knowledge pertaining to the advancement in medical technology specific to Universiti Malaya (UM) graduates undertaking Biomedical Engineering or related coursework. This collaboration has now been renewed for another three (3) years.

The previous collaboration from 2019 to 2021 resulted in 14 educational sessions organized and six (6) undergraduates awarded internship opportunities with Siemens Healthineers. One of the trainees became a full-time employee and eventually pursued other opportunities in the industry.

In this meaningful video, former interns of the program shared their experiences while several UM Alumni who are currently Siemens Healthineers Malaysia customer service engineers went down memory lane.
