Summary: Infectious disease (ID) testing in the US is rapidly evolving from largely manual assays, often performed as specialized lab functions, to fully automated tests run on routine immunoassay analyzers or molecular platforms. Benefits of automated ID testing for pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis can include decreased turn-around time, improved service levels to physicians and patients, and overall reduction of cost. Automation of other ID immunoassays such as syphilis and EBV should continue to expand menu and allow laboratory consolidation. This workshop focuses on emergent options for the automation of ID testing. In addition, current guidelines and tools for test interpretation for hepatitis, HIV, syphilis, and EBV are reviewed.
